So much to see and do at Fort Hays!

Open All Day

Fort Hays is open all day, 7 days a week from mid-May till mid-October. Stop in for our Cowboy Breakfast every morning, make reservations for our Mount Rushmore Tour Package, or check out the Chuckwagon Supper and Variety Music Show. Browse the Dances With Wolves film set and see the original buildings used in the Oscar award winning movie free of charge.

Easy To Find

Only 15 miles from Mount Rushmore National Memorial and 5 miles from Rapid City, Fort Hays Chuckwagon Dances With Wolves Film Set is the perfect gateway to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Located just off highway 16 between Rapid City and Reptile Gardens we’re nestled in the perfect place to start your adventure, whether you drive or take a load off with our all inclusive tour packages!

We Love Family

We welcome you and your family to stop at Fort Hays, a true western experience you’ll be talking about for years to come. With a variety of historic buildings and hands on activities kids can explore the past while learning about early American history. Make your own souvenirs or go on a scavenger hunt! Either way your family will leave Fort Hays with memories to last a lifetime.

Make Something

Stop by our Gift Shop, located inside the Supply House, for locally made Black Hills Gold jewelry or a variety of Dances with Wolves Film Set souvenirs. While you’re here, make your own brick at our Brick Factory, spin a plate at our Tin Shop, wind a rope at the Rope Shop, or check out our functional Blacksmith Shop and press your own commemorative coin to remember your Fort Hays adventure.

Who We Are?

We’re the wild west pioneers of Fort Hays! We believe in good food, tall tales, doing things the old-fashioned way, and, above all, a rip-roarin’ good time. The beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota are legendary, and we’d be happy to show you around. Take a walking tour of the Dances with Wolves film set, or sign you up with Mount Rushmore Tours to see the hills in style. Stop by and learn about America’s pioneer history in our Old West Town Square to learn about life on the frontier in the 1800s.

What We Do?

We are pioneers. For 25 years now, from Mothers Day through Mid October, we’ve been rising with sun to cook an amazing cowboy breakfast for our guests. Our Mount Rushmore Tour package is the most popular tour in the Black Hills because we’ve perfected it over the past 45 years. After breakfast we load up the buses, head out for a full day of adventures, and circle back for our famous Chuckwagon Supper & Variet Music Show. All admissions and two meals are included with our Mount Rushmore Tour Package!

How it all works?

Book online today for the Chuckwagon Supper & Show, the Mount Rushmore Tour Package, or our new 1880 Train package! Give us a call and book your entire vacation as well as lodging with one of our local hotel and hospitality partners. We’ve put it all together in a nice little basket for you, and discounted it so it’s a steal. It’s real simple, like sippin water from a tin cup.
