Start your adventure early on a one-way trip on the 1880 Train from Hill City to Keystone. In Keystone, you board the Mount Rushmore Tours coach in front of the 1880 Train Depot for a monumental tour of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Needles Highway, and the scenic roads and tunnels of Custer State Park. This package includes a one-way ride on the 1880 Train and a full-day tour of the Southern Black Hills.

    • 7:00-7:15 a.m. 
      • Check in at the 1880 Train Depot in Hills City, SD. (Train departs at 7:30 a.m.)
      • See the Black Hills of South Dakota by the vintage track powered by a diesel locomotive. Experience this relaxing one-hour, 10-mile ride between Hill City and Keystone. This narrated, historical, original right-of-way train experience powered by a modern diesel on the 7:30am departure only, is fun for railroad enthusiasts of all generations!
    • 9:15 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
      • Board the Mount Rushmore Tour motor coach in front of the Keystone train depot.
        • Mount Rushmore National Monument: We go through Keystone up to Mount Rushmore to spend at least an hour visiting the monument. There is plenty of time to see all the park has to offer, including the sculptors’ studio and the Lincoln Borglum Museum.
        • Iron Mountain Road: We wind over the Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway, around the pigtail bridges, traveling through scenic tunnels that perfectly frame Mt Rushmore in the morning sun, with spectacular Kodak moments!
        • Custer State Park: Keep your camera ready and stay on the lookout for wildlife like buffalo, burros, antelope, elk, and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. We will stop to see them when it’s safe.
        • State Game Lodge: Our lunch stop is at the presidential summer white house to former presidents Calvin Coolidge and Dwight Eisenhauer.  Here you can purchase lunch from a menu or enjoy the buffet. We recommend you try the buffalo stew!
        • Needles Highway: We continue through Custer State Park up Needles Highway passing through scenic tunnels and by beautiful overlooks. Check your camera; there are great pictures to capture here!
        • Sylvan Lake: Stop for pictures and a restroom break at the spectacular man-made lake located at the base of Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak). This picturesque lake is a favorite for local campers, rock climbers, and hikers.
        • Crazy Horse Memorial: We visit the largest mountain carving in the world for about an hour. You can visit the memorial and museums and learn about sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski in his home studio museum.
    • 5:00 p.m.
      • Return to the 1880 Train Depot in Hill City.
        • The 1880 Train Sightseeing Tour ends back where you started. Take some time to enjoy unique shopping at the Train Depot Gift Shop, refreshments at the High-Liner Snack Shoppe, or visit the South Dakota State Railroad Museum. Also, consider seeing the many boutique shops and restaurants in downtown Hill City or come into Rapid City to stop by Fort Hays for a free self-guided tour of the Dances with Wolves Film Set, our Old West Town and Chuckwagon Supper and Branson-style Music Show. Bring your 1880 Train ticket stub for a special discounted rate to enjoy the Chuckwagon Supper and Branson-style music show that’s sure to entertain all generations.  Doors open at 6:15p.m and the cowboy dinner bell rings at 6:30p.m.
